When you hear the word surrender, what comes to mind? I find that true and full surrender sounds scary, especially when someone is talking about full surrender to God. The first thing that comes to mind, what will I have to give up?
As I was singing during the worship service at church this past Sunday, I received a beautiful vision.
I could see that each person had a house inside of them. Let’s say this house was a picture of your soul. Previously, I have seen a picture of this house and the surrendering of this house looked like a balloon that filled the entire house, squishing out everything, including the person inside.
God showed me a different picture this Sunday. I saw the same house, but instead of something squishing out everything that is important to me, I saw the house filled with light.
This wasn’t just any light either. This was a warm and inviting light that filled each room and allowed me to be in each room and see every part of it.
“Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.” – Luke 11:36
This is the new picture of surrender that I received. When I thought of surrender before, it was daunting. Not a task I wanted to do.
But this new vision of a light that welcomes me to be a part of each room in my soul, that is something that I can get on board with.
Even if I don’t have “surrender” all figured out, I am not afraid of the word any longer. I want to invite God into each room of my soul to shine this beautiful light in and scatter the darkness.
This light fills each crack and crevice. It will not barge in, nor it will not burst through any door. The only way for this life-giving light to enter is for you to open the door. And each room has a door.
You see, our God is a gentleman. He will not go where He is not wanted. But if we are willing to receive what He has to offer, then there is nothing that cannot be accomplished!
Each time you open a door that once was shut, you grow in character and strength. While we may think that hiding certain parts of our life keeps us safe, the truth is the only place that shame can grow in strength is in the darkness. But once you let the light in, shame and darkness must flee!
Here’s the interesting thing; God knows everything about you and I anyway. While He knows every tiny detail you’ve ever done and thought, He would still be beaten mercilessly and die on a cross, just for you! Just for me!
This reminds me that the God of the universe; who created, knows, and loves me; wants to share every part of my life with me. That is what surrender is.
